SIX: LIVE ON OPENING NIGHT

All roads lead to Beyoncé.

SIX is a musical about six Queens. But it’s really not complete until we add our 7th Queen – the audience.

Beyoncé’s Live at Roseland concert revue was one of our major influences when writing the musical and, in this, Beyoncé sings the audience through the hits of her early career and her most recent album, with each of them re-orchestrated and jazzed up to be played by a live, onstage band.

When we made the studio album back in 2018 with our original London cast, we decided to follow the logic of the show’s conceit. We worked backwards, imagining what we had written already for stage was the “live version” of an imaginary, fully produced studio album. And then we tried to make that imaginary album.

So when it came to the idea of making a SIX Broadway album, again, we wanted it to live artistically within the conceptual world of the show. These Queens are pop stars doing a pop concert night after night. So once again, we had to ask ourselves the all important question: what would Beyoncé do?

This time, inspired by Beyoncé’s live album Homecoming, we decided that we wanted to make our own live album. We wanted to capture that buzz, that electric atmosphere that can only be created by a group of pop royalty stepping out onstage in front of an audience of squealing fans.

And, of course, it only made sense for us to be as extra as possible (again: What Would Beyoncé Do?). So we decided to do something (we think?!) no one has done before: record and release our cast’s opening night on Broadway.

So – welcome to the show 🙂
